UNITE CAB SECTION SUPPORTS #StayFareMayor
Safeguarding and improving the best cab service in the world
Today between 11am – 12pm black cab drivers will be offering free rides from Victoria Station, Charing Cross Station and Waterloo Station. Gett, the black cab app, will also be offering free rides during this hour within Zone 1.
Over the next year, and in the run up to the Mayoral Election in May, the #StayFareMayor team will look to promote the best taxi service in the world and safeguard its unique status and position in London. This campaign brings together the London Taxi Company, the LTDA, the LCDC, Unite the union Cab Section, RMT Taxi Branch and technology company Gett.
Steve McNamara, LTDA said: “#StayFareMayor is calling for a fair future that delivers better service to London through simple things like taking cards in every cab and everyone sticking to the rules. So we are giving our customers free rides, not asking for a free for all that would cause more traffic chaos across London. We need sensible solutions to unlock the streets and get London moving.”
“As taxi drivers, we see first-hand how the black taxi trade contributes to London. Whether that’s the professional service, the fact that we are safe and reliable or the fact we are faster than other services and make a real difference to London’s economy and businesses.”
This campaign is about a better future as it aims to make London the world’s leading low emissions city, by securing driver grants for ultra-low emission taxis and rolling out dedicated electric charging infrastructure across London for black taxis. The next generation of taxis will be ultra-low emissions, provide Wi-Fi, charging points and can be hailed in the street, booked by business accounts or through popular apps.
Peter Johansen, CEO, of the London Taxi Company said “We’re investing £250m in the UK to develop and produce the next generation ultra-low emission black cab, creating 1000 new jobs along the way. Today is about giving something back to Londoners and in doing so giving them understanding of the low emission, high tech future we’re working towards as a trade.”
#StayFareMayor is calling on the next Mayor of London, politicians and regulators to work with all groups to ensure a fair playing field for the black taxi trade that continues to deliver a universal service for all consumers.
Remo Gerber, CEO Gett Taxis Western Europe said: “London’s black cabs are the best in the world and thanks to the Gett app and our innovative technology the service they provide is getting even better. By offering an hour of free rides within Zone 1 we are giving people who haven’t travelled with us before the chance to see why Gett Black Cabs are the best way to get around London.”
